EN 1634-1: Understanding Full Doorset Fire Resistance Testing

As fire door standards continue to evolve, EN 1634-1 has become an increasingly important test standard for manufacturers, specifiers and certification bodies. The standard specifies the method for determining the fire resistance and, where required, smoke control performance of complete door, shutter and openable window assemblies.

Unlike a test of an individual component, EN 1634-1 assesses the performance of the complete doorset assembly. This means that the door leaf, frame, glazing (where fitted), hardware, seals, fixings and installation method are all considered as part of the tested construction.

The principle behind EN 1634-1 is straightforward: fire doors are intended to perform as complete assemblies, rather than as collections of individually tested products. The interaction between each component can influence overall fire performance, which is why the standard evaluates the assembled doorset under controlled fire conditions.

During testing, the doorset is installed into a representative supporting construction and exposed to a standardised fire curve within a furnace. Throughout the test, observations are made to determine how long the assembly maintains its required performance criteria.

EN 1634-1 testing forms the basis for classification under BS EN 13501-2, which defines the fire resistance performance of building products and elements. Rather than the familiar UK designations such as FD30 or FD60, classifications derived from EN testing are expressed using European classifications, for example E30, EI30, E60 or EI60, depending on the performance demonstrated during testing.

The classification awarded depends on the criteria achieved during the test. These may include integrity (E), which measures the ability of the doorset to prevent the passage of flames and hot gases, and insulation (I), which measures the ability to limit the transfer of heat to the non-fire side of the door assembly.

It is important to recognise that the fire resistance demonstrated during testing applies only to the configuration that has been tested or to variations supported through recognised extended application standards or third-party certification. Changes to components such as glazing, hardware, seals, frame construction or installation details may affect the applicability of the test evidence.

For this reason, manufacturers and certification bodies typically provide detailed installation instructions and schedules identifying the approved components that form part of the tested assembly. Correct installation and ongoing maintenance are essential to help ensure the doorset continues to perform in a manner consistent with the available test evidence.

As the UK construction sector increasingly adopts European classification standards alongside established national guidance, understanding EN 1634-1 is becoming increasingly important. By evaluating the performance of the complete doorset assembly rather than individual components, the standard provides the technical evidence used to classify fire resistance and supports a consistent approach to fire door testing across Europe.
